Groom Your Pets: Easy Tips to Get Started

Grooming is much more than brushing your dog’s hair. Grooming is also a way to check on your dog and ensure they feel well! Taking time to groom your dog will not only help them feel their best, but it will also strengthen the relationship between you two.

Read on for some easy grooming tips from your 30092 vet!

Grooming the Hair

Keeping on top of your dog’s hair is not just so their hair looks sleek; it also protects their skin and overall health! Grooming is a necessary part of their preventative care to keep your pet comfortable and help you identify parasites, fleas, skin issues, cancerous growths, and more.

If your dog has dense, short hair, brushing once a week should be sufficient. In contrast, if your dog has long hair, brush your dog daily. While brushing your dog, watch for any suspicious or strange marks, cuts, or spots.

Grooming can be fun, but it’s also a way to monitor your dog closely!

“Eye” See You

Giving your dog at-home eye exams should be included in your dog’s grooming and wellness routine. When examining your dog’s eyes, make sure there isn’t any crust or discharge in the corner of their eyes and that there isn’t any tearing or cuts. Your dog’s eyes should be clear, and the pupil sizes should be even.

In addition, checking the lining of your dog’s eyes is essential. Gently pull down the lower lid of your dog’s eyes; the lining should be pink (not white or red!).

Paws, Please

Your dog’s paws should always be included in your grooming routine. Your dog’s paws deserve special treatment with changing weather and different environments. Check your dog’s paws for any lodged stones, scrapings or cuts.

You may consider using ointments or balms to hydrate your dog’s paws and keep them in top shape.
